Understanding Tawaf in Hajj

Tawaf is one of the rituals of Hajj and Umah which involves circling the sacred Kaaba seven times in a specific manner. The ritual expresses humility, devotion, and complete submission to Allah. Tawaf is not just about walking around the Kaaba; it is an act of ibadah governed by clear rules and conditions.

All the pilgrims have to circumambulate the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, starting and ending at Hajr al-Aswad (the Black Stone), with the Kaaba being on the pilgrim’s left side. Each complete circle is known as a shawt, and seven shawts complete one Tawaf.

In Hajj, different types of Tawaf are performed, each with its own significance and ruling.

Types Of Tawaf In Hajj

There are different types of Tawaf in Hajj.

1. Tawaf al-Qudūm (Arrival Tawaf)

This is the arrival of Tawaf, which pilgrims perform on entering Makkah for Hajj. Pilgrims performing

Hajj al-Ifrād or Hajj al-Qirān; this Tawaf serves as a greeting to the sacred mosque.

There are different scholarly opinions on whether it is sunnah or wājib, but it is strongly recommended as a part of the Hajj rites.

2. Tawaf al-Ifādah (also called Tawaf al-Ziyarah)

It is one of the main Tawaf and obligatory on all muslims. Tawaf al-Ifādah is one of the pillars of the pilgrimage, meaning Hajj is not valid without it.

It is performed after the pilgrim returns from Mina following the Rami and Hady rituals on the day of Eid (10th Dhul Hijjah).

This Tawaf is also called “Tawaf of Visiting” because the pilgrim visits the Kaʿbah again after completing the major rites.

3. Tawaf al-ʿUmrah

This Tawaf is part of the Umrah rites: it is obligatory for the validity of Umrah and must be completed before the Saʿī between Safa and Marwah.

In Hajj al-Tamattuʿ, this Tawaf is performed during the Umrah portion before exiting Ihram and later re-entering Ihram for performing Hajj.

4. Tawaf al-Wadāʾ (Farewell Tawaf)

Also known as the farewell Tawaf, pilgrims perform Tawaf al-Wadāʾ before departing Makkah and after completing all the rituals of Hajj.

For most pilgrims, this Tawaf is considered wājib (compulsory) and missing it requires a Dam (sacrificial compensation) except for women who are menstruating or in post-natal bleeding.

5. Tawaf for a Vow (Tawaf al-Nazr)

This type of Tawaf is linked to a vow. When a pilgrim pledges to perform Tawaf upon the fulfilment of a certain condition, it becomes obligatory once the condition is met.

6. Voluntary Tawaf (Tawaf al-Nafl)

This is an optional Tawaf performed any time outside of the defined Hajj and Umrah Tawafs. It carries great reward and can be done at one’s convenience.

Conditions and Rules For Tawaf

Pilgrims need to follow some rules and conditions to ensure their Tawaf is valid. The following conditions are:

State of Ritual Purity

Tawaf requires wudu (ablution).
If wudu breaks, the Tawaf must usually be restarted unless interrupted by a necessity.

Proper Attire

During Hajj and during Tawaf al-Ifādah or Umrah Tawaf, pilgrims must be in Ihram (for men: two unstitched cloths; for women: modest clothing).

Seven Complete Circuits

Each Tawaf consists of seven complete rounds around the sacred Kaʿbah.

Direction

The Kaʿbah should begin from Hajr al-Aswad and must remain on the left side as you perform the circuits.

Tawaf in Hajj is not just a ritual, it is a sacred act of circumambulations each with its own rulings, timing and spiritual meaning. Whether obligatory, recommended, or voluntary, every Tawaf draws the pilgrim closer to Allah (SWT) with every step around His House, the Kaaba.
