What Are the Miqat Locations for Umrah and When to Assume Ihram?

Miqat refers to the designated boundary points set by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ where pilgrims intending to perform Umrah or Hajj must enter the state of Ihram. These sacred stations surround Makkah from different directions and ensure that every pilgrim begins their pilgrimage with intention, humility, and equality before Allah (SWT).

It is obligatory for anyone intending to perform Umrah or Hajj to assume Ihram before crossing their respective Miqat, regardless of whether they are travelling by air, road, or sea.

The Five Miqat Points for Umrah

  • Al- Juhfah or Rabigh (For the people coming from UK, Egypt, Syria, or the West)
  • Dhul-Hulaifah or Abyar Ali (For the people coming from Madinah)
  • Dhatul-Irq (For the people coming from Iraq)
  • Qarn-Al-Manazel (For the people coming from Najd and Taif)
  • Yalumlum (For the people coming from India, Pakistan, and Yemen by Sea)

When to wear Ihram

For pilgrims travelling by Air: From UK/ Europe:

Pilgrims travelling by air are required to wear Ihram before reaching the Miqat, but they should make the intention (Niyyah) and call out "Talbiyah" only upon reaching the Miqat following the announcement. (Saudi Airlines announces about Meeqat).

If travelling by another airline, the Meeqat zone comes approximately one hour before arrival at Jeddah Airport.

Important Reminder

It is not permissible for a pilgrim intending Umrah or Hajj to cross the Meeqat without entering Ihram, regardless of:

  • Mode of travel (air, road, or sea)
  • Short stay or transit intention

Failing to do so may require dam (a compensatory sacrifice).

Miqat is more than a physical boundary; it reflects on the moment when a pilgrim leaves worldly attachments behind and steps into a state of submission, devotion, and obedience to Allah (SWT).
